Bonamia-like parasite found in the Suminoe oyster Crassostea rivularis reared in France ArchiMer

Considering the economic importance of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas to the French shellfish industry, the appearance of major diseases in this species could cause dramatic decreases in production Suminoe oysters, of the non-indigenous species Crassostrea rivularis (Gould), were introduced into France to test their ability to adapt to local conditions. These oysters were imported after careful examination, and were maintained in laboratory quarantine. Some mortalities occurred 7 mo after importation. Histological and electron microscope examinations of 9 dead specimens revealed a parasite presumed to be a Bonamia-like protozoan. La bonamiose: caractérisation du parasite Bonamia ostreae et étude des ses interactions avec l'hôte, l'huître plate Ostrea edulis ArchiMer

La bonamiose, maladie due au protozoaire Bonamia ostreae a été détectée en 1979 pour la première fois en Bretagne au cours d'épisodes de mortalité. Depuis, cette maladie s'est propagée à tous les centres ostréicoles français, puis européens. Cette étude a pour objectif de décrire les compartiments du modèle B. ostreae/hémocyte de l'huître plates, Ostrea edulis et d'analyser leurs interactions in vivo et in vitro. La caractérisation enzymatique, antigénique et moléculaire du parasite a été réalisée. Ceci a permis de disposer d'une palette de réactifs pour la comparaison de ce parasite avec d'autres protozoaires. Ainsi, un parasite de l'huître creuse chinoise Crassostrea rivularis a té décrit, puis rapproché du genre Bonamia. La morphologie et l'équipement...

Ressources génétiques chez les huîtres creuses : conservatoire de souche et marqueurs moléculaires ArchiMer

The cupped oyster strain bank was created at Ifremer at La Tremblade in 1992. It was funded by the Poitou-Charentes regional council. Its goals were: 1. to study the intra- and interspecific genetic differentiation within the genus Crassostrea. 2. to study acclimatization potential of foreign oysters in French waters in order to identify species that could replace Crassostrea gigas in case of a major disease outbreak in C. gigas or in case of a need or desire to diversify shellfish production. 3. to study the possibility of interspecific hybridisation in the genus Crassostrea and hybrid performance.
